Traveling to Hungary - A District Is Reborn in Budapest

Cheap airfare is available to Budapest, Hungary where for years, the eighth district was considered one of the worst in Budapest. Decimated during World War II and still pocked by bullets from the 1956 Hungarian revolution, the district — also known as Jozsefvaros or Joseph Town — was synonymous with theft and prostitution.

But things began to turn around. In 2000, after security cameras were installed, burglaries and other crimes declined significantly. Soon galleries, cafes and night life arrived, drawn to the district’s grand 19th-century architecture and cheap rents.

Today, the area — on the Pest side of the Danube and one of the city’s 23 districts —has become a magnet for Budapest’s trendy bohemians, mixing soulful chic and shabby bourgeois, though not all nefarious behavior has vanished, chiefly in the district’s eastern pocket.
