Fly to Asia and Stay in a Familiar U.S. Hotel Chain

If you're purchasing a ticket for a trip to Asia, it is beginning to look a lot more like America—at least when it comes to hotels.

Major United States hotel chains are aggressively expanding into Asia, creating new options for travelers looking for familiar brands abroad. Starwood Hotels & Resorts plans to open 34 to 40 properties in the Asia Pacific region this year, or about three hotels a month, including the first St. Regis in Japan, the first W in Thailand and the first Le Méridien in Taiwan. Hilton plans to open new hotels in Japan and China by year-end. And Marriott will add about 20 properties, including four JW Marriott properties in India, four Courtyard by Marriott properties in China, and a Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai.

Fly to London to See Kensington Palace's Interactive Makeover

Princess Diana's former home, Kensington Palace, was re-branded "The Enchanted Palace" on Friday, March 26, 2010 to lure tourists from other popular London sights, such as Madame Tussauds waxworks and the Tower of London, where the Crown Jewels are displayed (behind thick glass).

In this interactive age, it's not enough for a stately palace to offer royal art, staid banquet rooms and roped-off thrones, so curators have opted for fashion, performance art and a bit of Alice in Wonderland fantasy.

The two-years exhibit, meant to draw viewers into the lives of past residents, uses lighting, actors and musicians to set the mood. One man even coaxes sound from a saw with a violin bow.

Domestic Tourism Exhibition in Nairobi

The "Holiday 2010" exhibition, aimed at the Kenyan domestic but also the regional tourism market, is on this week again between March 17-21, held as usual at Nairobi’s Sarit Centre. Hotels, lodges, safari camps, and beach resorts will all showcase their low-season special offers for Kenyans, Kenyan residents, and East Africans, many of which will see reductions of over 70 percent compared to published rack rates, making a holiday at home, i.e., a visit to the Kenyan beaches or game parks, more affordable for ordinary people and expatriated living in the region.

Traditionally, the annual low season commences in early April, or the week after Easter, and then runs up to the end of June, at times even until the middle or end of July.

Domestic tourism was the backbone of survival during the global economic downturn for many of Kenya’s accommodation establishments and has been targeted by the Kenya Tourist Board as a key component in marketing the country and making the tourism industry less dependable and less vulnerable to events elsewhere around the world.

Lufthansa Opens Refurbished Business Lounge Featuring a Beer Garden

In cooperation with Munich’s Franziskaner brewery, Lufthansa is giving passengers the chance to relax at beer tables and enjoy draught beer tapped from the barrel with Bavarian pretzels at Munich Airport. The beer garden, launched on March 23, 2010, is integrated into the refurbished business lounge in the Schengen departures area (Gate Area G) of Terminal 2.

On a total floor space of 1,100 square meters, the lounge is equipped with more than 300 seats and has many new opportunities for passengers to catch up with work or simply unwind and relax.

”Lufthansa is continuing to invest in customer comfort despite the present difficult economic situation,“ observed Thomas Klühr, group representative and head of Hub Management Munich. “The newly-refurbished business lounge measures up to the high quality that our passengers have come to expect from our product.“

France Eyes Tourism to Help Invigorate Wine Sector

PARIS - French authorities are targeting tourism as part of an effort to bolster the country's wine industry against rising global competition.

While France is already the world's most popular tourist destination, with wine a major part of its appeal, the trade thinks it can go a lot further in tapping into visitor interest.

The government will unveil on Tuesday a body to promote wine tourism, headed by international tourism and leisure industry veteran Paul Dubrule.

He is the co-founder of French hotel group Accor and author of a government-commissioned report on developing tourism around wine.

"We've fallen behind (other countries) in terms of marketing our offer," said Camille Barnier, head of wine tourism at Burgundy wine association BIVB.

"We've rested a bit on our laurels."

Promoting wine tourism is part of a government five-year plan unveiled in 2008 to modernize the wine industry in France and make it more competitive on the world market.

Tourism Changes On the Move in Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe continues to work hard to build its tourist industry. From Prague to Poland to Turkey, plenty of changes are in the works.

Prague, the region's most visited city, has nearly completed the first restoration phase on its iconic Charles Bridge. Built in the 14th century, this much-loved bridge offers one of the most pleasant and entertaining 500-plus-yard strolls in Europe. And now old-fashioned gas lighting will make an evening walk across this landmark even more of a joy.

Nervous about al-Qaida threats, Radio Free Europe has moved its headquarters out of the communist-era Parliament building in Prague's New Town. A guided tour now takes you step by fascinating step through recent Czech history in the building's once off-limits interior.

Virgin Galactic Completes Maiden Flight

VIRGIN Galactic's experimental SpaceshipTwo has made its maiden flight in the California desert.
The spacecraft, brainchild of British entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, took off nestled under the wing of its mothership White Knight Two (WK2).

"Virgin Galactic announced that its commercial manned spaceship, VSS Enterprise, successfully completed its first 'captive carry' test flight, taking off at 7.05am from Mojave Air and Spaceport, California,'' the company said.

The design for Virgin Galactic - delivered by Scaled Composites, Burt Rutan's aircraft maker in Mojave - was unveiled on December 7 and dubbed Virgin Space Ship (VSS) Enterprise.

In the future, WK2 will carry SpaceshipTwo to an altitude of about 50,000ft (16km) before dropping the smaller spaceship and allowing it to fire up its rocket motor to launch into space.

The test flight, which lasted just a few minutes, was the first in which both aircrafts went aloft without separating.

Wine-Tasting Tour of Germany

Sundown at the main market in Trier. As the light faded behind the roofs of the half-timbered houses that border the main market square, the produce vendors folded their tables, stacking crates of endives and carrots. But in a small tent at the square’s eastern edge, a strand of lights flickered to life: the Weinstand was open. A kiosk, really—no chairs, just an open-air wine-bar-in-the-round, and in its center, a young man and woman pouring wine. We ordered glasses and turned back around to watch the flower vendor amble across the cobblestones, her lilies quivering in their pails. She ducked down an alley between the ranks of row houses—this one pink stucco, the next yellow. And then, in an instant.

Fortunately, our wine arrived before the mood departed, and the first cool sips of the pale, straw-colored liquid—the elixir that had sparked our journey—delivered us back to our senses.

Air travel to Iceland disrupted by volcano

REYKJAVIK, Iceland – A volcano erupted near a glacier in southern Iceland, shooting ash and molten lava into the air and forcing the evacuation Sunday of hundreds of people from nearby villages.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the Eyjafjallajokull volcano, but a state of emergency was declared and scientists feared the eruption could trigger a larger and potentially more dangerous eruption at the Katla volcano.

The Icelandic Civil Aviation Administration ordered aircraft to stay 120 nautical miles away from the volcano area due to low visibility in some areas.

All domestic flights were canceled until further notice, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reported, but Reykjavik appeared to be unaffected with clear visibility.

Three Icelandair flights from the U.S. — departing from Seattle, Boston and Orlando, Florida — bound for Keflavik airport in Reykjavik were turned back to Boston, leaving about 500 people waiting, the airline said.

Flights to Stockholm, London, Amsterdam and Frankfurt were scheduled to leave Sunday but a flight to Oslo was canceled and passengers were being rerouted. The airline expected further delays throughout Sunday.
