Fretheim Fjord Hytter, Norway
For an awe-inspiring setting combining dramatic mountain peaks and sparkling fjords, this row of four red three-bedroom wooden cottages on a family-run organic farm in Flam, a small village in the heart of Fjord-Norway, is unbeatable. The Fretheim Farm has been in the family since the 1600s and today it is run by Anders Fretheim, his Australian wife, Sue, and their children. The cottages sit right on the fjord and each has its own boathouse, jetty and rowing boat with an outboard motor. Head out to go fishing or to have a closer peek at the absurdly out-of-place cruise ships that occasionally call in. Getting there is part of the fun. You fly to either Bergen or Oslo and catch a train (three hours and six hours respectively). At Myrdal you hop off, cross the platform and board another train to Flam.
It is widely considered one of the world's most scenic train journeys, passing waterfalls, craggy peaks and wildflower meadows along the way. Each cottage has a well-equipped kitchen with a wood-burning stove, satellite television and a mini stereo with a radio and CD player.
